isle of sark

February 12, 2011 § Leave a comment

isle of sark is a small island in english channel southwest of england. three miles long and a mile and a half wide, it has one of the most picturesque coastlines of the world. the island has a lot of unique characteristics; it is the smallest self-governing island in europe, there are no cars and no street lights in the island which gives it a relief from all the noise, pollution and stresses of modern life, and an odd one too; in 1990 it was attacked by a french nuclear physicist threatening to take over the whole island by himself.

but the reason it ended up here in my blog is that it is the world’s first dark sky island. international dark-sky association ranked this island the first in 2011. you can easily watch the milky way stretching from horizon to horizon which is very rare in other areas of the world due to the light pollution. among other places that were named international dark-sky places are parc national du mont megantic in quebec canada and flagstaff arizona in united states.
